Start your horse ride at our restaurant and farm hotel in the Golden Circle! Our herd of Icelandic horses are friendly, trained horses with a gentle temperament. They provide an enjoyable ride for all skill levels. Whether you are a novice or an experienced rider, a ride on an Icelandic horse will be a memorable equestrian activity. Please note that Efstidalur offers horse riding tours only in the summer months (June-July-August).

Kids Ride
Horse riding tours can be done at all levels and nearly all ages. Our kid’s ride is a great option for the young riders to get some experience at an Icelandic horse. It includes petting the horse and taking a guided walk around the farm.

Efstidalur mountain
A one-hour ride through the Icelandic landscape. This means uphill and downhill sections and even a river crossing. There will be moments for taking pictures as well.

Visit the famous Brúarfoss waterfall by horse! Tours starting from our farm and take you through the Icelandic landscape all the way to the waterfall. A spectacular tour!

How many gates does the Icelandic horse have?
The Icelandic horse has five gates: tölt, walk, skeid, trott and gallop.
How many horses are at Efstidalur?
Around forty horses. This is a mix of br ompetition horses and horses for rental.
Is there a weight limit for riding Icelandic horses?
Yes. The maximum weight is 100kg.
How fast do we go on a tour?
We never go faster than the slowest person on the tour.
Can I bring my own riding gear?
No. It’s strictly forbidden by Icelandic law to bring any horse riding gear into the country. This is to prevent transmission of animal diseases.
Do you have horses for all levels of rider?
Our guides try their best to pair a horse to you with your level of riding. All horses are different and unique with their own character and skills. Safety for both the rider and the horse is our highest priority.
What kind of breed is the horse?
Due to the isolation of Iceland, this stock remained pure while it was crossbred elsewhere. Other sources claim that the Icelandic horse is closely related to the English Exmoor pony. Whoever its cousins may be the Icelandic horse is pure-bred and unique today, over a thousand years after first coming to the land of fire and ice.
Is there a guide?
Yes. All tours will be supervised by a horse riding guide.
Do you provide horse riding equipment?
Yes. We provide all necessary equipment for horse riding.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We might have to check the conditions of the paths. In case a path may be impassable, we have to take an alternative route. In the worst case scenario we have to cancel the tour. Money will be refunded.
How old do I have to be?
Kid’s ride starts from an age of 2, if the parents allow this. All other tours starts from an age of 12 and above.
Is it possible to arrange a private ride?
Yes. Please, send us an email about your desired horse riding tour and we will work things out.
Can I cancel my tour?
Cancellations are free up to 48 hours before the ride. If you cancel on a shorter notice we charge the full price of the ride.
